Hollyford Track Guided Walk Itinerary

Pre Departure Briefing

At Te Anau and Queenstown the afternoon before departure at 5:30pm

DAY 1: Te Anau (Queenstown), Pyke River Lodge

Walk 4 – 5 hours / 17kms ( 12 m )

Depart Queenstown by 7am for Te Anau. Those starting in Te Anau join the trip at 9 am. Travel through the Eglington Valley to the start of the Track in the Hollyford Valley visiting Gunn’s Camp museum on the way.

Walk alongside the Hollyford River to Pyke River Lodge.

DAY 2: Pyke River Lodge, Martins Bay Lodge

Walk 3 – 4 hours / 12km ( 7 m )

Begin your day with a short walk to Lake Alabaster. Cross Fiordland’s longest swing bridge and then enjoy a captivating jet boat journey down the Hollyford River and across Lake McKerrow to the historic site of Jamestown.

Walk through the ancient Podocarp forest with huge Rimu, Totara and Kahikatea trees wrapped in massive Rata vines. Then visit the fur seal colony at Long Reef on the wild West Coast with the chance to see the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin. Spend the night at Martins Bay Lodge.

DAY 3: Martins Bay Lodge, Coastline, Flight to Milford Sound

Martins Bay Spit

Travel by jet boat to the beach and explore the seven kilometre Martins Bay Beach, sand dunes and lagoon. Return to Martins Bay Lodge and then enjoy a scenic helicopter flight to Milford Sound.

Board your coach for your return journey to Te Anau ( 5 pm ) or Queenstown ( 7.30 pm )

As an option take a cruise on Milford Sound before your return to Queenstown.


Accommodation in Te Anau or Queenstown is not included in this package and we are happy to make bookings on your behalf.

Pyke Lodge and Martins Bay Lodge are modern back country lodges with drying rooms, flush toilets and hot showers. The lodge kitchen treats you with a three course dinner and cooked breakfast, we are fully self sufficient and environmentally friendly with our energy needs being supplied by gas. All linen is provided.

Departure Dates

From 23 October to 18 April there are regular guaranteed departures. The guided walks operate on even days of the week (2nd, 4th, 6th…) in October, November, December, January and April. They operate on odd days of the week (1st, 3rd, 5th….) in February and March.

Getting There

Queenstown has regular flights from Christchurch and Auckland. Te Anau has daily shuttle services from Queenstown and Invercargill.

Fitness Level

A moderate level of fitness is required. To enjoy your walk you need to be able to walk for 4– 8 hours over 10– 15 km ( 7 – 11 miles ) each day. The track is a mixture of natural bush and mountain tracks. You do need carry your own pack from lodge to lodge which is likely to be 5 to 7 kg.


Your Guided Walk package includes 2 nights accommodation, all meals, track transport, jetboat, scenic flight, concession and guiding fees, snacks, backpacks and rain jackets.
